Our Projects
In 2017, a group of teachers and parents got together to brainstorm possible themes for the Natural Garden, an area where children use elements of nature to imagine, build and create natural playscapes. The Lawton Garden Team then organized a survey amongst the students, from Kindergarten to 5th Grade, to pick 3 themes out of the proposed 8 that they would most want to see materialize. The 3 most popular themes were the Kids Nests and Stick Huts, the Fairy and Gnome Habitat, and the Garden Maze. The other themes were a Balance Play area, a Painted Rocks garden, a Sensory garden, an Outdoor Classroom and a Water and Mud Station. A wildflower garden adjacent to the existing rain garden was established in May 2018 to provide a backdrop for the Fairy and Gnome Habitat. Logs have been obtained for a balance play area. We look forward to incorporating more of the proposed themes into our Natural Garden in the future.

Fairy and Gnome HabitatThe Fairy and Gnome habitats have always been a special part of Lawton. With the addition of the wildflower garden as backdrop to your child's creativity, anything is possible! Please find these flowers amongst the fairy dwellings...

Plant Id ProjectOur plant identification project aims to give students, teachers and parents an easy guide to identify the plants in our gardens. This will be especially helpful during the summer months when parents and their students maintain the garden as it will remove the guesswork out of what to keep and what to pull and when it is appropriate to harvest. Please see our vegetable garden tab to access this info. Students are very proud of the identification signs they have created...we hope you find these helpful as well!

Garden fenceA garden fence, both pleasing to the eye and functional, is needed to protect our plants from deer, rabbits and other unwelcome critters. The fence will need to be dug underground to deter rabbits from burrowing and 8ft tall to keep deer from jumping over. We are currently pricing out supplies. The conceptualized fence would look similar to the above photo, but taller. Eventually, we would like to add an arbor as well.
